.all about NatyaYoga
Natya yoga (Natya and Yoga –a comparative study) is a dissertation of smt.Kallakuri Uma Vyjayanthimala on Natya Sastra, the Hindu art of dance. The work deals with certain ancient concepts related to Natya, rather than dealing with the form of art or its intricate details. The work deals with the Natya sastra in its relation to the Hindu spirituality. The author has dealt with the puranic description of Nataraja who fills the entire cosmos. His graceful movements form the rhythmic dynamics of the universe. Everything in the universe is in a state of motion governed by a universal system of rhythm, periodicity and mutual regularity. Thus the Hindu art of dance is derived from the dynamic presence of the creator in the creation. Its ultimate object therefore is a merger with the all pervasive Nataraja.
For the first time the theme has been dealt with deep understanding of ‘Natya sastra’ and the author came out with ‘Natya Yoga technique’- an eight fold path for devoted seekers, who took the Hindu art of dance as their path to self realization-union with ultimate divinity.
This elaborate study deals with voluminous literature both on yoga and dance from Vedas, Upanishads, and Puranas. It also touches upon allied subjects like Music, Sculpture, and Painting etc including Ayurveda - the Indian medicine. ‘Naadopaasana’ - contemplating on the primal sound ‘Om’ and ‘Pindotpatti’ - a spiritual experience of the process of birth by Jeevatma (individual soul) are aptly discussed in this book.
This pioneering work in the field of dance proves that Hindu art of dance is ‘Yoga’. The author has collected all the relevant material to prove her point which made the work a good reference book. All the Shlokas which are referred from various texts are given in English, Telugu and Devanagari scripts for easy reading. The charts and tables provided by the author in this book will be an experience of revelation for the students and research scholars of dance.
Recently Natyayoga book is recommended as a text for Indian Culture/Dance and Dramatics, Illinois Wesleyan University, USA.
